European Union confirms accession of Bulgaria and Romania to Schengen as of March 2024

Bulgaria and Romania will partially join the EU Schengen Area of free movement as of 31 March 2024, as confirmed by the Council of the European Union on 31 December.

The Brussels communiqué explained how the European countries unanimously decided to partially integrate Bulgaria and Romania into the Schengen Area by lifting area and sea border controls. However, the 27 will have to take a new decision to choose the date for the abolition of internal EU land border controls of the two countries, according to the same communiqué.

The European Commission welcomed this decision, which comes after 12 years of negotiations. "Today marks a historic moment for Bulgaria and Romania and one of great pride for their citizens," said President Ursula von der Leyen in a press release.
